Augustine of Hippo

Wikipedia

Aurelius Augustine (354–430), also known as Saint Augustine of Hippo, was a Christian philosopher and theologian, author of Confessions and The City of God. One of the Church Fathers, he shaped medieval thought and Western philosophy. Augustine explored the nature of time, freedom, and grace, merging classical heritage with Christian doctrine.

✨ Born in North Africa, in Tagaste (modern Algeria). 📖 His Confessions is regarded as the first Western autobiography. 💡 Famous line: “Our heart is restless until it rests in You, O Lord.” 🎓 Before converting, he was drawn to Manichaeism and Neoplatonism. 🖋 In The City of God, contrasted the “earthly city” with the “heavenly city.” 🌍 His doctrines of original sin and grace shaped Western theology. ⏳ Reflected on time as an inner experience of the soul. 📚 Influenced Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, and many thinkers. 😅 Funny fact: as a youth, prayed “Lord, grant me chastity… but not yet.” 🤔 Curious note: sought ascetic life, yet enjoyed good wine and lively debates with friends.
