Dmytro Vovnyanko (pen name Dmytro Kalynchuk) is a Ukrainian journalist, blogger, and historical novelist; known for The Conspiracy Against Petliura and Girl in the Crosshairs, and a war veteran. Born in Zaporizhzhia, he lived in Kharkiv and Kyiv, working in technical and craft professions before turning to writing. A participant in the ATO since 2014, he has served in the Armed Forces since 2022 as a junior sergeant. His works merge journalism with history, creating the sense of a “living chronicle.”
🔧 Before writing, he worked as a joiner, furniture assembler, and equipment designer – a craftsman with a pen. 🖋 Started as a blogger, publishing posts online and in newspapers, later turning them into books. ⚔ Since 2014 he fought as a volunteer, combining journalism with war. 🎖 In 2023 he was promoted to junior sergeant in the Armed Forces. 📚 His novel about Mazepa presents the hetman’s “third choice”. 🌐 Built a strong following on social media, becoming a frontline influencer. ✍ Contributed articles to Ukrainian Week, Historical Truth, Texty. 🕵 Chose the pen name “Kalynchuk” as a memorable literary callsign. 📌 Curious: once dreamed of a craft career and actually assembled furniture before turning to books. 😄 Funny fact: many mistook his pen name for his real surname, and he joked about having “two passports.” 🤔 He once said: “While war means pain, people are not up to romance,” yet historical romance inspires him to write.
