Fedir Vovk (1847–1918) was a Ukrainian anthropologist, ethnographer, archaeologist, and public figure. Author of the seminal work Studies in Ukrainian Ethnography and Anthropology, he researched funeral rites, folk customs, language, and culture. Born in Poltava region, educated in Kyiv and St. Petersburg, he worked in France and was a member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society. Recognized as one of the first Ukrainian scholars of European stature.

📚 He was called the “Ukrainian Braudel” for his studies of traditions and culture. 🌍 Spent over 20 years in France, promoting Ukrainian scholarship abroad. 🪦 Specialized in funeral rites and the anthropology of Ukrainians. 🎓 Became a member of the French Anthropological Society. 📖 His Paris lectures attracted leading European scholars. 🧩 Collected folk art and everyday objects for research. ⚖ Wrote in Ukrainian, Russian, and French. ✍ Called himself a “student of the people,” working directly with living traditions. 📌 Curious: in Paris his surname “Vovk” was often confused with “loup” (wolf in French). 😄 Funny fact: colleagues joked he was so immersed in funeral rites that he knew more about “life after death” than about politics.
