Fernando Pessoa – 20th-century Portuguese poet and writer, author of The Book of Disquiet and Message, one of modernism’s most enigmatic figures. He invented multiple “heteronyms” – fictional authors with distinct biographies and styles. Pessoa became a symbol of literary multiplicity and inner universes.

🖋 Created over 70 heteronyms, most famous being Álvaro de Campos, Ricardo Reis, and Alberto Caeiro. 📖 The Book of Disquiet was left unfinished, compiled posthumously from fragments. 📚 Worked as a clerk in Lisbon offices, which gave him “quiet freedom” to write. ✨ His only book published in his lifetime was Message (1934). 🌙 His poetry blends symbolism, modernism, and mysticism. 🍷 Fond of absinthe, often writing under its influence. 🌍 Influenced European modernism, seen as a “precursor of postmodernism.” 🏛 Lisbon’s café A Brasileira hosts his bronze statue and a museum. 💔 Died of liver cirrhosis at 47, leaving thousands of unpublished pages. 😂 Fun fact: he wrote his own epitaph as “I know not what tomorrow will bring, but I feel everything.”
