Ostap Vyshnia – 20th-century Ukrainian satirist, author of “Cherry Smiles” and “Hunting Smiles.” His humorous sketches were beloved by millions, making him a symbol of folk laughter. He survived Stalinist repression and labour camps, later returning to literature with his trademark warmth.

😂 Real name – Pavlo Hubenko; chose a folksy, cheerful pen name. 📚 In the 1920s, his books sold in hundreds of thousands – record numbers. 🎯 Satirised bureaucracy and hunting life, always kindly. 🚔 Arrested in 1933, sentenced to 10 years in camps, worked as a medic. 🌍 After WWII, returned with “Hunting Smiles,” his most famous cycle. 💡 Style – witty, concise, full of proverbs and dialogue. 😮 Nicknamed the “king of Ukrainian print runs” – over 2 million copies sold early on. 😂 Funny: on hunts, he joked more than he shot – hares fled from laughter, not bullets.
