A quiet inheritance in an old New Orleans family turns into something far more intricate when Rowan Mayfair – a brilliant doctor unaware of her lineage – discovers that power has been following her since childhood. Strange coincidences, impossible recoveries, a sense of being watched: how much of it is intuition, and how much belongs to a history she never learned? The first book draws her toward a house wrapped in secrets, generations of women whose lives echo through diaries and whispers, and a presence that seems to move just out of sight.

As Rowan uncovers the stories of her ancestors – healers, visionaries, women drawn to forces that resist naming – the line between legacy and destiny shifts. Each generation faced similar questions: what is the price of knowledge, and who truly controls these gifts? The cycle expands through centuries of Mayfair lives, tracing how one family can rise, fracture, and reassemble under the weight of a power that both protects and corrupts. The atmosphere thickens: rituals, forbidden alliances, sudden shifts in loyalty, and a figure who appears in every era, too constant to be imagined.

Rowan’s journey becomes a search for clarity in a family where truth changes depending on who speaks it. Is she meant to inherit this influence, challenge it, or break from it entirely? And why does the presence tied to the Mayfairs seem to know her already? She chooses to step closer to the house that started it all…

The novel opens Anne Rice’s saga about the Mayfair witch family of New Orleans, which she linked in part to her own ancestry.

Published in 1990, it became one of the author’s bestselling works.

Rice drew on real descriptions of New Orleans houses, including her own mansion on First Street.

Later, Anne Rice merged this series with The Vampire Chronicles – characters and storylines intertwine in the novels Merrick (2000), Blackwood Farm (2002), and Blood Canticle (2003).

Legend has it: fans loved the novel’s atmosphere so much that travel agencies began offering “witch tours” of New Orleans.
